There are a few different ways to get ready for a hot date. Some guys throw on their nicest jacket and call it a day. Some spend 45 minutes tweaking their mustache in the bathroom mirror. Some do five or six sprays of fragrance and hope for the best. But the smartest move right now? Wearing something that proves you’ve got an actual personality—which brings us to Travis Kelce‘s latest date-night fit.
While out for dinner with fiancée Taylor Swift in New York City, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end pulled up in a (now sold-out) short-sleeved patchwork shirt by Marni. It was striped. It was floral. It looked vaguely like somebody had cut up three different vintage tablecloths and stitched them back together again. And you know what? It looked sick.
Next to Swift—whose floral-print dress complimented the flower motif on Kelce’s Marni shirt—the duo managed to coordinate without looking too couple outfit-y, which is always the danger. Nobody wants to look like they got dressed using the same moodboard. And this is exactly why every man should own one fun, deeply unserious date-night shirt.
Not a “going-out shirt” in the dated mid-Y2K sense—nobody’s asking you to resurrect shiny nightclub satin or something with flames on it (unless you’re into that, in which case, so are we). But there’s something genuinely useful about having one piece in your wardrobe that doesn’t take itself too seriously. A shirt that says, Yes, I care about clothes, but I’m also capable of having a laugh.
Because most dates are awkward enough already. You’re trying to look attractive without looking like you tried too hard. You want to look confident, but not super-polished. A slightly wacky shirt helps. It breaks things up, gives people something to comment on. Few brands understands this levity better than Marni. Founded in Milan in the ’90s by Consuelo Castiglioni, the Italian label built its rep on making luxury fashion feel a little left-field in the best possible way. That’s probably why half of Hollywood’s best-dressed lads are completely obsessed with it. Joe Alwyn recently wore two Marni knits at the same time, because apparently one wasn’t enough. Brad Pitt‘s been spotted in loose, freaky Marni suits that makes him look like a ceramics professor somewhere in southern France. And when British GQ spoke to Black Panther actor Winston Duke in 2024, he described wearing the brand as “performance art.” And that’s the thing with Marni. The clothes are nice, obviously. But they also feel like conversation starters, which is exactly what a good date-night fit should be.
Because the best fits aren’t always the slickest. Sometimes, they’re just the ones that make you seem like an interesting person to spend two hours across a dinner table with.
